Good writeup that I'm actually learning from, I'm going to talk about video and computer game violence on state-wide radio in November and I'm definitely going to bring up Jack T now.

The stance I've got, and will deliver, will be one that video games are nothing compared to computer generated gore and splatted in CSI, and what's seen in horror and splatter flicks like the SAWs and particularly the recent Hostel 2.

Hostel 1 is more deprived (I am assuming not having seen 2) because the first half is basically an hour of softcore porn.

Anyways, if you're really doing this I recommend reading The Problem (and the Danger) of the Continued Infantilization of Videogames. A ton of the stuff is fairly obvious, but it's good to point out from a certain perspective. If nothing else I recommend taking away that violent videogames are rated to be played by “mature” persons.

If you’re going to bring things like TV shows into the equation (which is an excellent idea) I highly recommend pointing out that it’s far easier for a child to happen upon CSI than GTA if they just turn on their TV.

Also, while Quake was ahead of it's time for creator intent being stated, Doom was hit really hard with videogame violence stuff along with Mortal Kombat around that time. Basically, at that time there was no doubt in mass media's head that "THESE GAMES TRAIN KIDS TO KILL!" much like Dungeons and Dragons "trained people to be occult wizards" ten to fifteen years earlier. The thing is, people stopped harping on D&D while the rage continues to burn for videogames.
